Types Of Verbs And Examples | English By Zahid Sir

A word that is used to describe an action or a state of being is known as a verb.

For example

He is going there.

He feels bad there.

 

Types of verb

1. Helping verb: It is also known as an auxiliary verb and its main function is to help the main verb. The examples of helping verbs include is, am, are, has, have, was, were.

Example sentence

     I am going to school.

 

2. Main verb: A verb which mainly shows and indicates an action. A main verb is also known as a principal verb or a lexical verb.

For example

Go, come, speak, listen, hear, play, sit, stand, dance, sing, etc.

He is coming here tomorrow.

 

3. Regular Verb: A verb which forms the past tense by adding d, ed, or ied.

For example

Appear, like,  hear, listen, accept, desire, arrive, reach, cheat, look, etc.

He has listened to this song.

 

4. Irregular verb: A verb that does not form the past tense by adding d, ed, or ied but their past forms are created in any other way.

For example

See, bring, do, break, make, catch, go, drive, drink, eat, take, read, bid, forget, teach, run, swim, cut, put, find, sweep, come, forgive, etc.

He has broken the chair.

 

5. Transitive verb: A verb that requires an object.

For example

Eat, play, bring, understand, write, read, speak, drink, play, sing, listen, fly, etc.

He is drinking water.

 

6. Intransitive verb: A verb that does not require an object.

For example

go, sit, laugh, cry, appear, float, panic, talk, sleep, sneeze, agree, etc.

I am sitting here.

 

7. Finite verb: It acts according to the grammatical pattern, follows its subject, and goes according to tense, number, and person.

For example

I am going to school.

I have gone to school.

 

8. Non-finite verb: It remains the same irrespective of the grammatical pattern. It doesn’t follow its subject and it does not go according to tense, number, and person.

For example

I am learning to go abroad.

I will learn to go abroad.

I would learn to go abroad.

I shall learn to go abroad.

I should learn to go abroad.

I can learn to go abroad.

I may learn to go abroad.

A non-finite verb is used in three different ways.

  • To infinitive= to go
  • Gerund= ing form
  • Past Particle= (V3)

He is working hard to achieve something.

Swimming(Verbal noun) is good for health.

Laughing(Verbal noun) is good for health.

Playing(Verbal noun) is good for health.

I have seen a broken(Verbal adjective) chair.
