Modals are those kinds of verbs which mainly express suggestions, obligation, advice, capacity, ability, request, or permission.
There are mainly 13 modal verbs in the English language.
Can, may, might, should, must, ought to, shall, will, could, would, dare, need, had better.
Out of the above 13 modals, 9 are principal modals while 4 of them i.e ought to, need, dare, and had better are also modals but they are not considered to be a very important part of modals.
Can, may, might in Hindi (सकता है)
May- request (अनुरोध, गुज़ारिश)
Permission (अनुमति, इजाज़त, मंजूरी)
Politeness (विनम्रता)
Possibility (संभावना)
क्या मैं आपकी कलम ले सकता हूँ?
May I take your pen? (Permission)
मैं अंदर आ सकता हूँ?
May I come in? (Permission)
अब आप घर जा सकते हैं।
You may go home now? (politeness)
आज बारिश हो सकती है
It may rain today. (30-50%)
It might rain today. (10-20%)
It can rain today. (50-60%)
8 Different types of sentences with different structures
- S + can + V1 + O
वह आज गाँव जा सकता है। (can-present-active)
He can go to the village today.
- S + can + be + V3 + O
उसे वहाँ बुलाया जा सकता है। (can-present-passive)
He can be called there today.
- S + could + have + V3 + O
वह वहाँ बोल सकता था। (can-past-active)
He could have spoken there.
- S + could + have been + V3 + O
उसे वहाँ पढ़ाया जा सकता था। (can-past-passive)
He could have been taught there.
- S + can + be + O
वह डॉक्टर हो सकता है। (can simple with “be”)
He can be a doctor.
- S + could + have been+ O
वह डॉक्टर हो सकता था। (Past)
He could have been a doctor.
- S + can + have + O
उसके पास यह किताब हो सकती है। (can simple with “have”)
He can have this book.
- S+ could + have had/owned + O
उसके पास यह किताब हो सकती थी।
He could have had this book. (Past)
Or
He could have had/owned a car.
