5 Phrasal Verbs With “Take”

1. Take aback: To surprise or shock somebody 

Example sentences

We were taken aback by the way he behaved.

All the employees were taken aback by the way the manager of the company suddenly started misbehaving with the senior employees.

Many of his friends were taken aback by the way he had dressed up in the party.

 

2. Take after: To be similar to somebody in appearance or character, especially when one is related to a family.

Example sentences

She is very hardworking. She takes after her brother.

Many daughters take after their mothers as far as cooking skills are concerned.

Rahul takes after his father as the facial expressions of the father and the son are the same

 

3. Take somebody through something: To explain something to somebody

Example sentences

Let me take you through the pattern of the exam.

The teacher took the students through the concepts of the Maths questions as they had lots of confusion.

One of my friends took me through the new policy prepared by the newly-elected government.

 

4. Take to: (i) To like something or somebody

Example sentences

All the students took to the new teacher as he was teaching really well.

Many people took to the new pen after they came to know that it works really well.

 

                  (ii) To start doing something often

Example sentences

She has taken to eating plain food to avoid health issues.

All of them have taken to playing football every morning.

 

5. Take it upon oneself: To accept responsibility for something

Example sentences

All the employees of the company took it upon themselves to complete the project on time.

Rahul took it upon himself to start a new business and make it successful.

He took it upon himself to take care of the children in the orphanage.
